Samuel R. Harris as a Young Child
Samuel R. Harris was born in 1936, in Deblin, Poland . He had four brothers and sisters. Two of his sisters were Sarah and Rosa. He was very young when he went to a ghetto. It was hard for Sammy since he was so young. Sam needed someone to take care of him. His family tried their best to take care of him.
The Hiding
After the roundup two the deblin concentration camp,Sammy and his two sisters, Sarah and Rosa. At the camp Sam and his sisters got very thin soups with very little horse meat. It was served in a rusty can. Rosa, one of Sammy’s older sisters, took care of them.
Liberation
Soon after Sam arrived at the Czestochowa concentration camp, he was liberated. In the sky that day, Sam saw many colors from the guns of war. To Sammy they looked like fireworks. Then, the Germans left their posts to go help with the war. Since the Germans had left, the prisoners could leave that horrid place, including Sammy, Rosa, and Sarah. All the Jewish prisoners were rejoicing, but they were not sure what to do. One of the Jewish prisoners broke into the Germans quarters and found food. Sammy had some butter. He ate the whole thing. Most of the Jewish prisoners decided to leave the camp
The Orphanage
Sammy, Sarah, Rosa and Walter, Rosa’s husband, wanted the Russians to bring them to Deblin, Poland. They stayed there for one night and then decided it was not safe. Rosa and Walter wanted to go to Walter’s hometown in Austria. They were going to Austria to look for work. Sarah and Sammy stayed in an orphanage in Poland because Rosa and Walter only had enough money for the two of them. Although there was very little clothing and most had no shoes, Sammy was treated very kindly at the orphanage. He finally started to eat normally. Some of the children in the orphanage shaved their hair to control the bugs.
Ariving in America
Rosa wanted Sammy and Sarah to be adopted in the United States of America. When Sammy arrived in the U.S., he only knew a few words like “Coca Cola” and “yes”, and “no." Sammy and Sarah had counselors and they showed them New York. Sammy loved the Empire State Building . In New York, Sammy and Sarah lived in a temporary holding home Soon Sammy got adopted, and Sarah did, too, but to different families.

Sam began to live with his adopted family in Chicago on April 10, 1948. What he brought with him was a pair of white mice and very little clothing . His new parents were really nice. Sam thought his knew mother was very beautiful .At his new home he locked up everything about his past in his mind.
Sammys New School
Sammy began a new school. He was put in the sixth grade at Crestwood in Northbrook, Illinois. At this new school, Sammy participated in many activities; his favorite was Boy Scouts . Two years later he became a Life Scout. When he graduated, Sammy won the American Legion Award. In 1954, Sam started high school. He went to New Trier for high school. Eventually he went to Orin Well College in 1958 . Everything he did, he did well.
Sammys Family
Sammy married a woman named Dede. They had two children David and Julie. For a long time Dede knew that Sam was not telling her something. She was trying to get Sam to tell her. Finally, he told her about the Holocaust. He opened up and told her all the memories he had locked away . Sam told her that he was a Holocaust survivor. Eventually, Sam and his family went to Israel and Europe . Sam wanted his family to go to Germany, also. However, he did not want his children to hate German people. In 1981 Sam and his family went to the world gathering of Holocaust Survivors. At first he did not want to go, but he decided he should go. He was going with his family. A while later Sam decided he wanted to face his fears and go back to Poland .
Sammy Going to Poland
When Sam got to Poland, he was led by a tour guide who showed Sammy and his family where Sammy had lived as a child. His house, however, had been destroyed . Sammy also went to see where the Jews had been beaten him. He also toured his grandparents’ farm in Colna. As a boy, he had gone to his grandparents’ house on holidays.
After visiting Europe, Sam came back to the U.S, wanting to devote the rest of his life to the million of victims who died during the Holocaust. Since then, he has been very involved with the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Because the Illinois Holocaust Museum is overcrowded, Sam and others are building a new Holocaust Museum. Sam is the chaperone of the development of the new museum, which will be in Skokie, Illinois. Today, Sam speaks in schools, churches, and city halls about his survival of the Holocaust.
Conclusion:Samuel R., Harris is a Holocaust survivor. He was very young when he went to a ghetto in the Holocaust. When he was in these concentration camps and ghettoes, he never gave up. He kept trying and is now a Holocaust survivor. He dedicates the rest of his life to the people who died in the Holocaust.
